Use sudo. By default, Ubuntu doesn't have a root account - similar to OS
X in that respect.

For copyright reasons, Ubuntu doesn't ship with mp3 codecs, and various
others. See:
http://ubuntuguide.org/
for installing them (and a load of other useful info relating to root).
