'The internet's golden age is over'

Date: 23rd February 2006
Venue:RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ
Timing:6.30 - 8.00pm - please arrive early

The idea of the internet as a global and independent forum, open to all, is
being increasingly threatened by governments and corporations now beginning
to see the potential for control of their citizens and consumers. Is this
the end of the web's golden age, or the start of a new, more sustainable
and commercially viable medium? Was the internet ever truly 'by the people
for the people', or just the preserve of the techno-literate elite? What
should the new internet dream be?

Chaired by Tom Standage, Technology Editor, The Economist Speakers include:
Suw Charman, Open Rights Group, Danny Meadows-Klue, Chief Executive,
Digital Strategy Consulting, John Naughton, The Open University, The
Observer, Karen Thomson, Chairman and Chief Executive, AOL UK

This debate is presented in conjunction with the RSA. This event is
complimentary, however seats are limited.
