You might find your video driver has a "NoDDC" option or somesuch, which
will stop X from requesting DDC information from the monitor
(information on the monitor's spec.). I guess then it has no choice but
to either

a) guess (or use silly defaults)
b) use your values

Knowing X, it'll pick a) :)
