I have discovered recently that some insurance companies aren't
interested in height above river level - merely horizontal distance from
the flood plain.  We live quite close to the river, but on the opposite
side from the flood plain and a considerable number of feet above.
However a lot of companies simply won't quote because we are within 250
(horizontal) metres of an area which floods.  Trying to get them to
understand that the presence of the flood plain is a positive advantage
and actually ensures that we won't flood is a fruitless exercise.
