You poor sod.  Adaptec raid cards are some of the worst bit of kit on the 
planet.  There ior stuff is crap.

lol. I also have a compaq smartarray controller (both of these were salvaged 
from old machines) would that be better or worse? :)

I may try one new cable and then give up and buy a cheap Dell raid server.
