before doing anything else, back up all your /home directories including
invisible files, just in case you need to restore your settings from them.

Are you using OpenSuSE 10.0 or the boxed set? if the latter, you are entitled
to upgrade support from SuSE.

Can you boot the system from the DVD? If so, it should be straightforward to
install and then choose upgrade as soon as you are given the chance on the
menu. That should allow you to keep your settings (with minor exceptions: see
below).

I can't give much advice because I upgraded directly from 9.3 to 10.1, which
has Novell's new spatchcocked dual installation-source and online-upgrade
system.

Some packages will have been replaced by major upgrades, or discarded, in
10.0, so you won't be able to keep your settings for those, but you should
for everything else.

Apart from the new online-upgrade system and the problems with NVIDIA graphics
drivers (neither of which apply to 10.0, AFAIK,) I'm very pleased with the
upgrade and have been able to stick to what I want to stick to.
