It's certainly possible.  You can certainly do it with vBulletin  
(http://www.vbulletin.com) and a hack/module from http:// 
www.vbulletin.org and then use vBulletin as a gateway to the news  
server.

I'm sure similiar add-ons exist for other forum software too.
