[Gllug] Permissions on /tmp, /var/tmp

On the SQLite mailing list currently, there is a discussion on directory 
permissions of the temporary files directories. The OP says that he has 
permissions "trwxrwx-wx", which allows regular users to create and use 
files, but not search the directory. This is causing problems in the 
SQLite code which opens the directory.

The OP is using Mandriva 2006, and says that it includes a daemon that 
periodically "fixes" permissions for temp directories if changed from the 
above. Has anyone else seen this perverse practice?
