Try trinity rescue kit (TRK). Its got a facility which allows you to 
update the stock standard ISO when its booted on an XP machine and 
extract the necessary files to mount NTFS read-write. Its command line 
only and has utilities for unerasing NTFS (although how effective I'm 
not sure).
