[Gllug] OT: ico

So this is a bit OT but someone here will hopefully have a clue.

How do you go about creating a .ico file that works?
openstreetmap.org/favicon.ico was created in the gimp. It works in
firefox on the address bar but not in the bookmarks. It doesn't work in
safari or IE.

I have the feeling that if I get someone to open and resave it in
photoshop it'll just work, but I'm hoping for an open solution.
