I was going to say:
pvscan checks all possible things for being pv's, and so will whinge
about non-pv's.
then I tried it and didn't get that error.

Can you do "pvscan -v -d" and send the result?

Because you haven't allocated any of it to an LV?

do "sudo lvdisplay" to see the things that should turn up under
/dev/mapper.
