You're right.  They just look at the boot sector.

Emon:  Don't worry about viruses in the Linux world - there aren't any 
of significance (and the ones that DO exist don't actually "work").  The 
only time you need virus scanning in Linux is when you're serving files 
to Windows machines.  Welcome to the world of much safer computing!
