Exactly.  Most distro kernels are generic enough to work on pretty much 
any hardware you can throw at them.  I would have expected this work, 
perhaps with the exception of X not starting first time.

If you'd had a custom kernel on there then your chances of it working 
would have perhaps been a bit less.
