[Gllug] Pound sign!

When I ssh to a particular remote server and use emacs, for some
reason I cannot type the GBP (pound) sign.

(Since I'm using the same emacs to type this message, I can't type the
pound symbol here either ...)

There is no .emacs file on this machine.

Where should I start looking?  Needless to say I can use the pound key
(shift 3) on the local machine just fine.  I can also use the pound
key on the remote server from bash (on the command line).  It's just
from emacs that it doesn't work.
