Have you checked this? What locale is the gnome terminal started from?

Should be fine...
FYI, I run rxvt-unicode (aka urxvt) in an en_GB.UTF-8 locale at work,
ssh'd to home, which is also an en_GB.UTF-8 locale, where I have a UTF-8
enabled screen running UTF-8 enabled irssi, and that works.
As does UTF-8 in vi (well, vim...):

This is on Debian unstable (both ends)
I have this in /etc/environment on both hosts:
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8
And this in my .screenrc at home:
defc1 off
defutf8 on
