In fact the "slightly kludgy" method Peter suggested involves smb - you
just load it from Grub:

        title=SBM
        kernel /boot/memdisk
        initrd /boot/sbm.bin

The drive is working as normal except the BIOS refuses to try booting
from it. It's making me a bit nervous, need to find another rescue
method if booting Knoppix isn't going to work.
