Even without IPMI, most boards have sensors, so a kernel with sensor
hardware support and Net-SNMP is all you need. Recent Net-SNMP releases
include agent support for the lmSensors MIB, on (at least) Linux and
Solaris, which makes monitoring pretty easy. If you want automated
alerting as well just configure appropriate SNMP traps.
Of course IPMI boards and on dedicated LOMs are ideal, but if you don't
have them, you can still have decent monitoring.
