I believe M$ has some patents on some of the .net/mono libraries. Hence
most developers are avoiding using Mono, since M$ could turn around and
start enforcing their patents at any time.

Regarding OpenXML, I believe M$ has patents on the XML schemas used for
Office documents.

Re. Novell sharing profits with Microsoft - my own application, LiVES has
been included in several commercial distro's (including Linspire and
Mandriva), yet I've never received a single penny from any commercial
distributor for my work. So in this regard, the effect is zero (except
that I'd rather Suse got all the profits, rather than a percentage going
to M$).
