I have not tried to install on that exact hardware but had similar 
problems with a new Dell SC430 small server (SATA, Pentium D, USB only) 
which I resolved using a backported Debian Sarge installer from:

http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/

...which got me going. Then installed SMP kernel. The name change from 
kernel-version to linux-version initially caught me out :)
