To be fair though, that journalist may well have been aware that he was
using an over-simplification that (a) non-technical/Linux-aware people
might understand ("operating system" is techie enough for most people!)
and (b) was a succinct, almost accurate way of mentioning the distro
without a huge and irrelevant digression.

Teaching lay people what an OS is, and that there are alternatives to
Windows, and that Linux is one of those, and that it's free and Free is
difficult enough without introducing the additional complexity of
distinguishing between GNU/Linux and the various distributions.

At least now people are aware of Ubuntu, and therefore Linux, to the
extent that it has a mention in an article that has nothing to do with
technology or computing; is that a sign that Linux is beginning to
become less of a geek-only OS?
