Yeah that sounds like a pretty likely candidate - perhaps /boot hit
100% usage.

Better than that, use RPM's built-in verification:

  rpm -V kernel-2.6.17-1.2142_FC4

Which will tell you if the package payload matches what the package
headers claim it should be.
