[Gllug] 'Ran out of input data' when booting a new kernel (FC4)

I've just got the following error message after running 'yum update',
updating my kernel to 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4:
booting fedora core 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4
root (hd0,0)

ran out of input data
-- System halted
Rebooting, entering the boot menu and selecting a 2.6.15 kernel
causes the thing to start up normally. If I remove this kernel, the
PC boots normally. If I put it back, it doesn't.
There's nothing unusual about this PC - it's a £120 "linux pre-
installed" (although I re-installed) eSys job.
Any ideas what's causing the boot failure or how to fix it?
Also, now that the PC is booting again, ssh will not start. /var/log/
secure says:
Oct 3 04:45:56 localhost sshd[2021]: Received signal 15; terminating.
Oct 3 04:47:57 localhost sshd[2023]: Server listening on :: port 22.
Oct 3 04:47:57 localhost sshd[2023]: error: Bind to port 22 on
0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use.
Oct 3 04:53:49 localhost sshd[2843]: error: Bind to port 22 on
0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use.
Oct 3 04:53:49 localhost sshd[2843]: fatal: Cannot bind any address
are these two problems likely to be related?
Access to this PC isn't easy (remote, lives headless in a cupboard),
and I'd really like to avoid a re-install if practical :s
Thanks in advance,
Paul
