dd(1) hardly works the CPU at all (unless you're on a degraded RAID-5 or
RAID-6 array with a slow CPU, or are using PIO or something equally
silly, in which case you'll know, because your box will be intolerably
slow).
If a bunch of md5sums or big compilations crash it, that's confirmation.
(A GCC bootstrap-and-test is probably best, because even minor CPU or
RAM problems are almost certain to crash it. A kernel compile is
somewhat less likely to spot such problems, because the kernel that
results is never run.)
