NAFF sorry, MAFF decided to turn upland moors into useable land, so they
paid farmers to dig drainage ditches through huge areas. The results
included excessive erosion, and flash flooding below because rainwater was
no longer absorbed into the "sponge", but very little usable land, so the
same fermers are now being paid to try to block these drainage ditches, many
now far larger than when freshly dug.
Much of the rest of Britain is so rocky or otherwise poor quality that it
is useless for anything other than livestock or forest, while much of the
best land is close to being "farmed out" by intensive farming.
