Anyway, to get back to the original problem:

I went and poked around the user's mail system, which was a mess. I
ended up running mb2md on all mailboxes (quite a lot), merging the
directories into a smaller, saner set, using fdupes to eliminate
duplicates, and re-setting the icedove configuration to use IMAP not
POP3. Strangely, that freed up a gig of disk space.

Hopefully, this will solve the problem, as well as making incremental
backups smaller...
