[Gllug] OT Computer freezes

Back again with an OT problem affecting the wife's
computer running W2000.
Frequently and without warning, the machine freezes
and locks (both mouse and keyboard become inoperable
and Crl-Alt-Del does not work - only a hard reboot gets
things going again). This situation existed when she went
for Sky broadband, so I got her a 160 Gig hard drive and
reinstalled W2000 and all other programs from scratch.
There was a honeymoon period of a few days during which
everything worked fine. Now the problem has returned.
I've tried the obvious things like changing the keyboard
and mouse without effect.
Music plays fine and so do films on DVD - the machine
does not freeze while these programs are running. It seems
to happen mainly when the mouse is in use, but a new mouse
doesn't help.
Some time ago, I read an article about faulty PSUs creating
strange problems and am now wondering if this could be the
culprit, but I don't want to go to all the trouble of
changing the existing one if it's unlikely to be the cause.
Does anyone have any experiences similar to this problem or
any suggestions that might help please?
John.
