If you're forced to go the windows route, I can confirm Acronis as being
pretty solid: It's saved my skin in the most testing of user environments:
A laptop owned by my children which regularily gets wiped. Also a
client's 3-workstation setup, which runs an automated incremental: it
makes me sleep well at night.

I implemented a backup box a couple of years ago which was a bunch
of disks hanging off a couple of 3ware controllers: a frontend to rsync
called dirvish[1] with some nice options. The overnights were taken to
the DR site and verified, so not really a 'across the wire solution', but
the client's funds were limited.
