I think I'd also say that LVM is a very nice solution these days. I
typically use XFS as a filesystem, which also given the ability to
freeze the filesystem, and provides xfsdump/xfsrestore which are
wonderful tools.
My only big complaint about LVM is that the snapshot implementation
absolutely sucks. I have to have a separate LV to snapshot onto, and
each snapshot has a performance overhead. Compare this to ZFS, which is
available in Solaris and OpenSolaris, and it looks pretty poor. ZFS is
seriously impressive though - we have a very expensive NetApp filer at
work, and ZFS gives me practically everything the NetApp can offer, at a
vastly lower entry cost.
