Take a look at the Coffee HOWTO. It probably isn't what you want to do
(parallel ports are probably becoming scarce these days), but may
provide some inspiration or link somewhere useful.

There is also an 'led' driver in the kernel which appears to be for i2c
or other simple bus devices
