Thanks for all the replies - I had to pop out for a couple of hours.

To answer your queries...

The content of the emails is pretty simple - text-based, and most will print
onto an A4 page, so they're not long.

The recipients are all registered subscribers - the same list gets reused.

The company provides a job-auctioning service, hence the need to send out
notifications to all the subscribers, who are sometimes expected to bid at
short notice.

My client is sending the emails from their office via their broadband
ISP - using a bulk-mailer called E-Newsletter Manager. (IOW they are sending
the mail via the ISP's mail system.)

The list of 750-odd subscribers might increase over time, but I think it's
safe to say it will stay within 1000.

There was an issue with Hotmail recently - Hotmail temporarily blacklisted
their IP address or domain - and apparently the ISP 'suffered' too. Many of
the subscribers use Hotmail or Yahoo accounts because they are moonlighting.

Hotmail was persuaded to whitelist them again, but the ISP is still unhappy
with things as they stand.

Both seem to be suggesting the same solution, I think.

Can anyone point me to a company that could provide this service for my
client?

Many thanks again!
