What do you mean "fit for the purpose"? (a stupid and meaningless phrase
that needs to DIE)

I can send long documents in Email just fine. It might be an insane
thing to do and some people sensibly block such actions, but email
itself will happily deliver binary documents (because of base64 and
friends).

Mostly just because things like IM are lagging email in pervasiveness.
It's much more likely that IM will eventually supercede email than it is
email will get entirely respecified from the ground up.
