[Gllug] OT re Sky Broadband

The wife has ordered Sky Broadband and 'volunteered' me
to install it in W2000. After reading the literature, it
seemed within my limited capabilities, but I cannot get
a connection and the help line seems to be an outsourced
one where the telephonists are script readers not
technicians.

Sky provide a Netgear modem, three microfilters and an
installation CD. The flat has three phone sockets, the main
one installed by BT and two extensions.

I've tried every combination of socket, microfilter and
telephone as well as resetting the modem and disconnecting
things in sequence, rebooting and so on. Nothing allows
a connection to come up. Oh! Sky assert that BT has activated
the line, but I don't know how to prove that.

Running 'cmd' and 'ipconfig' shows IP Address, Gateway etc.
The only light not appearing on the modem is that showing the
internet connection.

It seems to me that I've eliminated all possibilities except
faulty hardware (?modem or microfilters) or something wrong
with the BT line or extensions wiring.

Can anyone offer help, or suggest what else I can do, please?
I know this is OT, but this newsgroup frequently helps with
none-Linux problems.

John.
