Very much so. They managed it by having tiny amounts of memory. Flash
hasn't developed very quickly and is only just now getting to the stage
of being suitable for replacing hard disks (in terms of capacity, speed
and lifespan). Magnetic storage like disks and tapes has always been the
fallback, even in the days of the Spectrum.
