Not exactly an unbiases opinion. I think I can summarise that article in
one sentence:
"DTrace is more mature, and it's what I use, so I'll write about that"
He's right. DTrace *is* more mature, it's probably more stable (although
I've personally never seen a SystemTap crash), and it's a different design.
But it's not available for Linux, either, which tends to be a bit of a
problem when you want to debug a Linux system :-)
In time, SystemTap will mature, and catch up in some of the areas where
DTrace is currently ahead. But even in it's current state, it's both useable
and useful. The choice seems simple to me -- if you're using Solaris, go
with DTrace, and if you're using Linux, use SystemTap. Trying to compare
the two isn't particularly meaningful for anyone other than the developers
of each of them. Once you've chosen your OS, you get the tool that comes
with it, and the available tracing tool is likely to come fairly low on
the list when it comes to factors influencing the choice of OS...
