Interesting point about 64-bit code execution speed!

I always assumed in my ignorance that 64-bit CPUs were optimised for 64-bit
instructions, but would execute 32bit instructions not quite so well and thus
slower.  On the other hand I also assumed that 64bit code being bigger would
take longer to load from main memory into the on-chip cache when required for
execution -  whether this is true or material or not I have no idea !

Its totally academic for me at the moment as I have no need for huge address
spaces.  A fast 32bit CPU does absolutely fine :)

by the way, with regard to discs, my personal experience (touching wood heavily
with left wrist whilst typing) is that scsi discs beat any variety of IDE/SATA
disc hands down for reliability and the latest ones are very fast as well. for
commercial use  the premium may be worth it.   I am sure many will disagree and
say scsi is a dead duck for price/performance  -  but horses for courses!!
