In the 'good old days' of operator suites in every local exchange, I believe
an alarm bell/light/klaxon went off in the operator suite when a 999 call was
dialled and the operators rushed to answer it.   I think the then 'dialled'
an ordinary number depending on which service you required to connect you.


How does this #1 a minute charge work?
Is it that non-BT telcos simply route 999 calls to the BT operator service
and pay #1 a minute for the privilege?   In which case this is probably quite
reasonable, as they are not having to fork out for their own staff to handle
the calls.
