On a SuSE system, hwinfo --cpu
gives you a lot of information.
Just tried it on a dual-core Opteron system. It uses /proc/cpuinfo, and
outputs the data in a nice format. Plenty of other useful options to
'hwinfo'
Also on that system, cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep cores returns
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
cpu cores : 2
