What is the current status on font copyright?

I am sure that in the distant past under American trademark law it was 
possible to have a similar font if the name was different. 
Equally, I thought German law protected the style of a font.

Is this the case and if so where does the UK law stand.
Does any company offer a font pack for OpenOffice or is there a portal site 
for copyright free fonts?
