Knoppix will "just run" on most hardware, but will not write to any drive
until it is given permission using the menu from a right-mouse-click on the
drive icon. It can also use a network connection to send data to another
computer.
If Knoppix fails to boot on a laptop you may need to specify NOAPIC or
similar, if it gets part way through booting and then hangs you may need to
specify NODMA for the CD drive, fuller details by pressing F2 or F3 when the
initial screen appears, or read the documentation on disc using a running
computer.
There is a dedicated rescue CD, although I have never used it, see
