This is why ISPs provide mail relays; it's almost not worth bothering 
trying to send SMTP mail from end users' systems if you really want it 
to arrive given the widespread use of spam countermeasures, specifically 
  DNS blacklists.

I appreciate that it's nice to roll your own, but I'd probably advise a 
more pragmatic approach :-)
