These have been notoriously difficult to get working with Linux in the
past.
Many people use these I would imagine, as they are the type given away
with broadband subscriptions (I could be wrong). As far as I know, its
not just a matter of plugging them in and you're off and running with
most Linux distros. whereas if you have a router with either a single
ethernet connection or a small hub/switch then it should give you a DHCP
lease and you're off and running.
As an aside, I went to visit relatives yesterday, bringing my laptop as
I had some work to do. I saw that my sister in law has a USB connection
for broadband, and I didn't even bother trying to use it.
