IANAL but my understanding was that it wasn't necessary to record a
piece of writing or whatever for it to be protected by copyright, but
that evidence of the date when it was written is extremely useful in the
case of a dispute.
I got this understanding from several discussions I've read about web
pages, where it could be in dispute which of two identical ones was the
original.
Mind you, the advice may well have been preceded by the letters 'IANAL'.
