one of the particularly bizarre things about games is that they expend
considerably effort writing game engines that do exactly the same things
as all the other game engines.
The only ones that really push things forward tend to be written to be
licenced to others (the Unreal and Quake engines come to mind).

no fresh faced uni graduate with a few years of red book skills is going
to best someone like John Carmack ;)
