[Gllug] LPI Exams - relevance?

Help request from those who knows:

I have been planning to put my trainee staff through LPI 1&2. I have not
done these myself, so had a good look at the exam samples etc. in the
Roos Brunson book suggested by the LPI as the 'most up-to-date' example.

While undoubtedly there is much of general *nix relevance covered in
these exams (more of general use than say MCSE's) I was troubled to see
how out-of-date they are. For example the training exams include loadsa
stuff on kernel 2.2, LILO, sendmail, lp style printing (not CUPS), and
many other things that I sincerely doubt any of my staff will ever
encounter.

Aptitude (for Debian) and YUM (for RPM) are not covered at all.

Now I appreciate that exams will inevitably slip behind practice.

My question to those with experience of this, is, despite these issues,
are the LPI certifications still useful as evidence of anything?
