Not arguably. Copyright exists the moment a "work" is brought into 
being. No special measures need to be taken to protect it and it belongs 
to the individual creating it.

Most employment contracts include a clause that stipulates that you 
agree to assign all copyright and intellectual property rights to 
anything created during company time or using company equipment so an 
email to this list made under those criteria may well fall into such an 
assignment.
