This is exactly what you would expect - it's how attachments work.  It's 
not "got translated" - this is the only way (well, almost the only way) 
an e-mail can have an attachment.

I'm not sure where firefox comes into it.  Presumably you're accessing 
your hotmail e-mail through a web mail interface and firefox is the 
browser you're using?

If the hotmail webmail interface is failing to recognise the fact that 
the e-mail has an attachment then either there's something wrong with 
hotmail or the message has got slightly mangled before it got to 
hotmail.  It's got nothing to do with firefox which is merely your web 
browser.

I'm slightly worried by the "into a single file to my hotmail address" 
bit in your first paragraph.  What do you mean by "into a single file"? 
  If your work mail server is concatenating several e-mails into a 
single one before forwarding them to hotmail then that might indeed 
cause problems.

Have you tried changing your forwarding so that your messages go to a 
real e-mail system instead of hotmail to see whether the problem persists?
