Unfortunately this is where I got stuck. There is an LV that spans the
two drives. With one of the drives not connected the system refused to
run LVM and related commands. I suspect due to LVM not being able to see
what it expected.
I am now exploring how to reduce a LV so that it resides wholly on the
old 1TB drive. I will then try again with the method you suggested. I am
hoping that LVM will not complain if it is merely unable to see a VG as
opposed to only being able to see 1/2 of a VG.
Failing that I can repartition the 80GB drive and relocate the 1
remaining VG to its own partition and work from there to continue
following the path suggested.
My window of opportunity for today is closing so I'll have to give it
another go tomorrow.
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/LVM-HOWTO has the documentation
that I am reviewing before my next attempt. (hmmm I could rsync all the
files from the lv on the old drive to the a lv on the new 1TB drive,
copy the few that I need from elsewhere and do a reinstall onto the old
1TB drive and then join the new 1TB drive to it.)
Thanks for the assistance so far. I feel I have learned more and I am
more confident that I am less likely to erase my data. Any additional
insights will be appreciated.
