That has be my experience in the past but my mind took a little while to
catch up to what Richard Jones has already suggested. That is to look at
the usb connection.

I have not opened it yet but it does seem a fully self contained device.
The device's light responds as the instructions said it would to
indicate that a bar code has been accepted so I suspect there is a
translation happening under the hood.
