Even if your chosen hospital has got 'choose and book' running, it seems that
the 'back-end' part of the operation is still antiquated.
Admittedly not done on line, but a few years back, I booked a routine
appointment for my mother months ahead with the Parkinsons nurse. When we
arrived we were kept waiting for absolutely ages with no information as to why
the delay. When I finally blew a fuse and spoke to a manager it turned out
they had lost my mothers 'file' and therefore the nurse couldn't see her until
it was finally found. On another occasion the nurse was away ill and they
never told me until we arrived after an 45 minute car journey :-(
The funadmental problem with the NHS, it seems, is that the whole thing runs
for the convenienceof the system rather than for the convenience of the patients
(sorry, we are all 'customers' or 'clients' now, in new-speak)
