Not true - it depends strongly on your kernel.

I have my E270 (vodafone 7.2 thing) working in Ubuntu hardy, but it
takes effort in lower kernels. The problem is the CD formatted flash
drive containing the windows drivers. This needs to be switched off
before the device will work.
